Happy 6th Anniversary, NYMG Community

Today marks the 6th anniversary of Not Your Mama’s Gamer. Six years ago today we launched the site and broadcast with just me and Alex Layne. Over the course of six years, over a thousand posts, and almost 150 podcast episodes we have grown a lot. We now have a full staff of bloggers and podcasters that contribute amazing work to the cause and some days our site sees more traffic in one day than it did that entire first year. Trust me, that still boggles the mind.

With all of that one thing has not changed over the years, my love and appreciation for the folks who put in the work that makes NYMG possible and my commitment to the community. Some folks stay for a few months and some stay for years, but the work that they all do is invaluable.

Last year this time I was asked what I wanted to see for NYMG in the future and my response was to do more activist work in the online and offline communities. This is something that, I think, we are making some real strides toward and a direction that I would like to continue to see us going. This year our #Gaming4Good initiative has raised funds to help provide breast cancer screenings and education for women who might not otherwise be able to afford it, support long term support programs for children poisoned in the Flint water crisis, helped support a program that works to help prevent soldier suicide, and (most recently) raised funds for the Southern Poverty Law Center. I would love to see us do more work like this in the coming weeks and months. In the current political climate many of the people, programs, and things that we hold dear are in jeopardy and NYMG will be here to put it’s voice and effort behind working to preserve those things in any way that we can. As a member of NYMG I can say that I will also be putting my individual efforts behind them offline as well. As always we welcome the assistance of members of the community. We know that donating monetarily is not always possible, but we welcome signal boosting and your participation in our #Gaming4Good events as well. We can do more if we work together.

Thanks so much for sticking with us for another year and we hope to be around for many years to come. Happy Anniversary, friends. Game On!
