I’m glad someone is concentrating on not just pewdiepie but gaming culture as a whole.
I’m 48 years old Ann’s I’ve only recently started gaming (yes I’m old)
But nothing made me feel more old and out of it as when I finally went to online gaming and heard the language spoken by the majority of people there. From 9 year olds to people my age all calling each other nigger and faggot. The words are used freely and very naturally. When I asked about it I was told the words don’t mean anything racist or homophobic. These young people went on to tell me that they by using these words they are normalizing them. They are essentially “taking them back”
I have to admit, at the time they had me convinced.
Now, I’m not so sure. I wonder how many of these kids know the origin and history of these words. Probably not many.
Pewdiepie saying the N-word isnt shocking. What’s more shocking is that we haven’t caught him saying it sooner. I don’t think that he said the word so quickly and easily because he’s a racist that uses that word daily. He said it so easily because he’s a gamer that uses the word daily.
I don’t know the answer to this.
