Fire Emblem Fates Introduces Same-Sex Marriage

On Tuesday, Nintendo released a statement that the newest installment of the Fire Emblem series will include same-sex marriage.

Past editions of the series utilized a matchmaking Support system that powers up characters who form relationships with each other. In 2013’s Fire Emblem Awakening, the Support system led to marriages and children. Some fans criticized Nintendo for failing to include any non-heterosexual options.

There are some limitations, however. Fire Emblem Fates comes in two different versions, and only one homosexual character is in each game, dependent on the gender of the player’s avatar. If players wish to pursue a male relationship, they should pick up the “Conquest” edition. For females, try the “Birthright” version.

A third, downloadable version of the game will become available sometime after launch that intends to include both of these characters.

According to Nintendo’s statement:

We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game’s scenario and the nature of the game play. In the end of course, the game should be fun to play. We feel that Fire Emblem Fates is indeed enjoyable to play and we hope fans like the game.

The Japanese version, Fire Emblem if, launches June 25. The U.S. and PAL games will release in 2016.
