Nintendo Announces Yarn Based Yoshi Amiibo (and It’s Not Fair)!

I remember when Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventures first launched. Pea was about 3 1/2 and really liked video games (still does for the record), but still spent most of her time demanding that I play the games that she wanted to watch. When she asked for Skylanders I was a little skeptical. It was ridiculously expensive for a kids game and the equivalent of 3 little Funko type figures. In the end I was hooked. So much so I ended up buying like 10 figures the first weekend alone.

ducklandersWhen Skylanders first released Pea was young enough to believe they were really heroes who had been turned into toys. She even thought that other things could be ported into the world. It was adorable. We both loved the game. It was like a rougelike trainer of sorts and it was fun. When the Disney Infinity sets came out I was pretty sure that these would be just as popular…but it was not to be. The Infinity game never held me the way Skylanders did and I’m sure that this was part of the reason for Pea’s lack of zeal too, but we did score some really cute figures in the deal.

I was absolutely, positively sure that I was done with collectible add-on game figurines even after Nintendo announced the amiibo. They were adorable and I thought they would look great on my shelf but I really wasn’t going to get sucked in a 3rd time (4th if you counted a short foray into Skylander Giants on the 3DS for Pea’s birthday). And all of this was until Mario Party 10 released and then I bought a few select amiibo and was perfectly content calling it quits because honestly the amiibo don’t really do a whole lot (but they do unlock another set of minigames) that the game doesn’t already come with standard. I was safe with Mario, Peach, and Toad.

splatoonamiiboUntil yesterday when Nintendo announced during Nintendo Direct that not only would they be releasing amiibo for Splatoon (the paint ball game that I am dying to play with Pea), but that the upcoming title Yoshi’s Woolly World is going to be released right alongside Yoshi amiibo made out of yarn in not 1, not 2, but 3 damned colors. So they are taking two of my greatest passions, yarn and video games, and putting them together. All three of these beauties will be sitting on my shelf (though I may have to buy 2 pink ones to satisfy the little gamer in the house). And oh yeah, these woolly wonders also add co-op benefits to the single player game by giving you the second Yoshi to follow you around that you can turn into a yarn ball to launch at your enemies. Get that, multiplayer without having to play with anyone else!

Damn you, Nintendo.
